Tropical Storm Fay: Over-reaction
August 18, 2008 by T Love.
note: some sarcasm
Its freaking tropical storm! There is sooo much coverage on Fay down here, it ridiculous. I have ceased watching any weather reports down here since Saturday. You would think that with all the coverage, a cat 3 was hitting the coast. All the hype and coverage reminds me alot of the first 1″ snowfall in Chicago. Whippeeee dooda. To put this in perspective, Chicago has experienced similar wind conditions from strong Low pressure systems. There is more rain associated with tropical systems, but this is Florida. Florida thunderstorms drop alot of rain on a daily basis. Whiiiippppeee dooooda.
I now live in Daytona (formerly West Palm Beach) and my apt complex leasing office (the parent company) issued a memo to all residents stating that “there is a serious threat to our area from Tropical Storm Fay”…and we will close the office till Wednesday when it is safe. My thoughts - Oh please.
I am sooo glad Fay has not and hope it doesnt, reach Hurricane status. Reaching hurricane status, to me, would just justify all the coverage and over-reaction (especially on the east coast counties) for the media. If your west coast or west-central, well thats a different story and safety should be a top priority. Granted, the tornado threat increases.
At the peak of the storm, Key West experience sustained 30kt, Peak 44kt - approx. My thoughts: not very exciting, but you would never know that from the media. Naples, FL is 23kts gusting to 29kts. Fay will be very close to Naples in the next few hours.
Comparing Tropical storms & Frequent midwest strong low pressure systems (generally speaking)
- Both can deliver sustained winds of 20-50kts for 12-36 hours
- Rain for TS and for the midwest - rain, sleet, or snow.
- In Florida, garbage collection ceases, schools close, buisnesses board up - In midwest, unless there is a forecast for 6″+ of snow…life goes on.
Cry me a river fever….
…row it!

Watching Phelps win 7th gold….live?
August 16, 2008 by T Love.
At work. Its 320a. NBC olympics are on. The TV display “live”. Phelps 100 meter butterfly has started. I’m watching intently sitting down. The last 25 meters, I begin to stand up as Phelps is catching up to the leader cavic. They touch the boards. It looks like phelps lost. The results are shown. Phelps won by one hundreths of a second. I open my stnading stance, wave the arms, and scream “He did it….Yeah!”. I was pumped.
Then I realized it wasn’t really live and that this occured about 9 hours ago. haha.

Sore knees after Wedding
August 10, 2008 by T Love.
Kathy and I attended a wedding from a Embry Riddle classmate of ours this past Friday. It was held at the Hyatt in Ft. Lauderdale. The wedding was schedule to be held outdoors at the hyatt but due to thunderstorms, it was moved indoors at last minute. The reception was held atop the rooftop of the 17 floor Hyatt. Pretty cool ever-changing view of Ft. Lauderdale as the circle of table revolved around the middle of the room. Lots of dancing as my knees keep reminding me.
The wedding and reception were nice and fun. Our room, however, was very substandard for the Hyatt. The bathroom was the worse with cheap ass 70’s 4″ tub wall tile, rusted mirror on the door, and overall, just an old plain appearance. Internet in the room was $10 and it was $20 to self park at the hotel. I complained at checkout and recieved a discount off the room and a food gift certificate for a hyatt restaurant.
I learned that Ft Lauderdale and Miami hotels charge to park their. I couldn’t believe it. The most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Now when I book a hotel, I have to ask if they have free parking.
